Downsizing for Retiree’s
Many retiree’s have lived in their current homes for years, raised children there, maybe even have memories with their grandchildren, and just maybe great-grandchildren. (If you’re any thing like my family, my great-grandma was a great-great grandma!). In the homes that house generations, almost every trinket, pot, pan, and decoration has sentimental value.
It’s a tough day when we come to the realization that we don’t need such a large home, the kids have flown the coop, and it’s time to downsize or “rightsize”; we now have this home of sentimental stuff to sort through and decide what is essential to keep and what is okay to let go of. If you are planning to re-size your life to make it more manageable, here are some rightsizing tips to help you sort through the sentiment.
1. Start with personal papers and photographs. These often take the most time to read through and decide whether to keep, save for you adult children to review or shred.
2. Make sure you are comfortable and have enough light.
3. Use a clean long table. It will be a handy place to put items.
4. Hang sturdy garbage bags nearby to toss unwanted items.
5. Use smaller stackable boxes when organizing. They will be easy to move and pick up later.
6. Go through all your clothes, and get rid of any that no longer fit, or you haven’t worn in over a year. Many charitable organizations will happily accept gently worn, clean items.
7. Most importantly, while going through all your items, enjoy reminiscing.
