Downsizing your Clutter
After living in a home for many years, it is amazing how much clutter we manage to collect. Even if you’re not looking to move, here are a few great tips from freshome.com on how to sort through all that clutter to help you organize, purge, and tidy so you can have a clean home.
1. Purge now: Each day, choose a different room to purge. Throw away, donate, and sell items that are not needed or used. Be picky, and honest.
2. Arm your family with storage items: If it has a place to go, it will be easier to put away. Find a system that works for your family.
3. Teach your family to de-clutter: When the kids bring home crafts from school, extra papers and other miscellaneous items, get them to help decide what is most important to keep, and what can be disposed of. Have them keep a storage box of their stuff to be responsible for.
4. Optimize vertical storage: Rather then using all your floor space, think up! Bookshelves, shelving and attractive storage boxes make great organizational tools that keep your items in plain sight.
5. Make it part of your schedule: Once a week, take a gander around your home and get rid of unused items. By doing a little bit constantly, the amount of clutter will be reduced drastically.
6. Know when to let go: Old clothes, memorabilia, and family collections – these are items that often have a strong sentiment attached. But, likely they are the cause of your clutter. Assess your reason for keeping your items, and have a limit to how much you can keep. This will help you make a better decision on what items you really need to keep.
7. Every time you finish, put it away: You tell your kids to put it away when they are done with something, you should do the same!
