The Ever-Changing the Bavarian Rockies
As the European Kitschy look is beginning to look out of date, and Bavarian themes are no longer the style, there is a clock in the quaint town of Kimberley, British Columbia but it's not just a clock,it's the largest free standing cuckoo clock in North America. It features “Happy Hans” the yodeler who makes an appearance every hour, or for a quarter, he will come and sing for you. As overheard on a video found on YouTube when the clock is going off, “it’s quite possibly the best twenty-five cents you’ll ever spend”.
In the heart of Kimberley, you’ll find the Platzl, a pedestrian only town square. Filled with alpine styled shops, schnitzel house, and German music playing over the loud speakers, you might think you’ve been transported to a European village. With a little digging though, you will discover that the yodelling Happy Hans is only an illusion. It was created by a city who planned for the future, wanting to ensure they would be a sought after tourist destination, they created a theme to help that image. It was a decision that enabled the city to thrive after the mine that they were currently depending on closed.
10 years ago, the city removed the kitschy Bavarian stuff to give the city a more sophisticated feel to keep up with the tourists. It was clear that their Bavarian theme wasn’t the real McCoy. As the city has grown, they have evolved into a four-season destination. But, that doesn’t mean the Cuckoo clock and the Platzl are going any where any time soon.
As Kimberley prides itself as a thriving culture and arts centre, they also pride themselves as a “city of festivals”. If there wasn’t the Platzl, where would the International Old Time Accordion Championships take place? And how much fun would the accordion championships be, without a Happy Hans to sing along?
