Finding Your Inner Qi
After you move into a new home in a new community, the next big step is unpacking, organizing and decorating. While designing your new home, you may want to consider adding a little Feng Shui to your home. What is Feng Shui you ask? Why would it be a benefit to your home? How do you get Feng Shui? Well here is a quick guide with information from About.com to help you find your inner Qi or C’hi (pronounced chee in English).
Feng Shui is an ancient art/science developed over 3000 years ago in China. The term Feng Shui has a literal translation of wind and water (Feng – wind, Shui – water). Feng Shui is derived from a Taoist belief; the understanding that land and nature are alive, and filled with energy or Qi. Within the Chinese culture, wind and water are associated with good health; thus good Feng Shui has come to mean good fortune.
When adding Feng Shui to your home, you should start with the basic concept of Feng Shui as “the five elements”. These are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each element has a colour that represents it, and it is the easiest way to improve the Qi in your home. Wood can be green or brown in colour; fire can be red, strong yellow, orange, purple or pink; earth can be light yellow, sandy/earthy or light brown; metal is white or gray; and water can be blue or black. Here are some easy tips to use your Feng Shui colours:
1. The colour green is excellent for improving health, and balancing family life.
2. The colour blue is good to support career growth
3. Strong yellow is good for happy gatherings and good times
4. Pure white will bring supportive energy for all your creative endeavours.
Now that you have your colours, don’t forget to apply some Feng Shui to your houseplants. Spiky plants like snake plants and cacti are good for shielding bad energy, but watch where you place them. Rounded leaves on a plant create a sense of abundance, and you want to be sure to avoid droopy plants. They drag down energy.
Now that you have some Feng Shui 101, happy decorating, and good luck! Oh, never mind, you won’t need it – you have Feng Shui!
