Homes for Sale: Moving Speak 101

With a move comes plenty of excitement and chaos. The last thing you want to concern yourself with mid-move is the industry talk to ensure all the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed. Here is a handy list from energycrew.ca with definitions from dictionary.com to ensure that you are up to date with your moving jargon and have all your moving documents in place.

Homes for Sale1. Agent: a person or business authorized to act on your behalf.

2. Bill of Lading (Contract/Moving Agreement): a document issued by a carrier that lists goods being shipped and specifies the terms of their transport. It is a formal contract that specifies dates, terms and can also be used as a receipt.

3. Binding/Non-Binding Estimate: a binding estimate is an agreement made in advance with the mover that guarantees total cost based on services and quantities to be moved. A non binding estimate is an approximate cost of the move, and is not binding on the carrier.

4. Carrier: an organization employed to carry goods.

5. Estimate: the mover’s approximate cost based on quantity or weight of shipment as well as costs for additional moving services requested by you.

7. Hazardous Materials: any material that due to quantity, concentration, or physical/chemical characteristics may pose a hazard to human health or the environment.

8. Inventory: a descriptive and detailed list of goods in your household move showing the number and condition of each item.

9. Travel Time: the total amount of time spent driving from the mover’s location to the first pick up location plus the time spent from the last top back to the mover’s location.
