Kimberley Alpine Resort to Open Early

If you haven’t heard the news, well, you must be one of the ones who got buried in that massive snowfall that hit Kimberley B.C. last week. While you get unstuck from all that snow, I’ll fill you in… Due to said massive snowfall, Kimberley Alpine Resort has announced that they are opening their slopes over a week early. This is a very merry surprise for the locals, and for the neighbouring ski bums. But, before you run out the door with your toque on and skis in tow, here is a quick checklist to glance over to make the most of your opening day.

1.Clothing: if you’ve ever been skiing/snowboarding and have been ill prepared, you know how uncomfortable it is going up the lift with wet underpants. Not a pleasant experience. You have to remember not to simply dress warm for the outside temperature. You’ll be exerting yourself, so you have to remember to dress for your body’s needs and temperature. And layer! Don’t forget to layer. From the chilly early morning runs to the beautiful and sunny afternoon runs, the temperature will change drastically, and your internal temperature. Make sure your innermost layer is wicking, and will wick the moisture away from your body. Your best bet for your feet is a thick wool sock, will fit comfortably in your boots, and also help wick moisture away while keeping your feet warm.

2.Before you go, it’s likely that you will need to take your skis/board in to get a tune-up. You can either perform the tune-up yourself or take them to a shop. The benefit of the tune-up is to remove any rust that built up while they were in storage, and to also smooth out any scratches or gouges that you incurred during the last season.

3.If you feel a bit rusty, invest in some lessons. Not only will you get better at the sport much quicker, but also you will help develop a better technique that will likely be easier on your body. You’ll probably fall less too, and for that, your behind will thank you.
