Downtown Deli is a Favourite of Kimberley Locals
Some Kimberley locals have a serious if harmless addiction: Blackened Chicken from the Downtown Deli in the Platzl. Whether in a wrap or on a Kaiser, many Kimberlites get a tad twitchy if they go too long without paying a visit to “Ruth’s” and picking up one of these Caribbean-inspired mini-masterpieces. Owned and operated by Ruth Ramdin, a decades-long Kimberley culinary institution, The Downtown Deli and Catering Company is key part of Kimberley’s reputation for terrific dining.
Ruth’s background is part Ukrainian, and she celebrates this by making perhaps the world’s best borscht - she’ll be happy to serve you a bowl, but she’ll take the recipe to her grave. And while the borscht is simmering, Ruth will be baking white chocolate and cranberry muffins, making a batch of her sinfully delicious huckleberry sauce, or preparing a 150 seat wedding feast. If you’re in the Platzl, drop by the Downtown Deli, grab a sandwich, take a seat outside, and do like the locals do – hang out, greet everyone that walks by, and watch the kids playing in the water park.
